Musk's Working On Master Plan Part 3

Musk's Working On Master Plan Part 3

If you haven't heard of Tesla's "Master Plan," which was written by CEO Elon Musk himself, you haven't been following the company carefully enough. The first version of Musk's Master Plan was released in August of 2006. The initial plan's title was a bit of a joke, in true Musk fashion: "The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan."

Fast forwards nearly exactly ten years, and Musk has released the second half of the plan. In July 2016, it was published on the Tesla blog with the title "Master Plan, Part Deux." Now, Musk is working on part 3 – as indicated in his recent tweet. For years, Tesla and Musk have been trying to make Part One and Part Two of the Master Plan a reality. While a great deal has been accomplished, there have been some setbacks. Part Two, which includes full self-driving capability, is still being worked on by the firm. Musk, on the other hand, appears to be fairly happy with how things have gone thus far, since he's disclosed publicly that he's now working on Part 3.

We don't know what Part 3 of Musk's Master Plan will entail, but there have been plenty of hints in the past. The Tesla Bot is the most recent example. There could, however, be a slew of additional considerations.

Master Plan Part One

Tesla CEO Elon Musk's first-ever post published was dated August 2, 2006 and titled "The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (just between you and me)." Musk had lofty dreams even back then, but what's most noteworthy is that Tesla has accomplished three of Musk's four primary goals set out nearly seven years ago.

The following were Master Plan first goals:

  1. Build sports car
  2. Use that money to build an affordable car
  3. Use that money to build an even more affordable car
  4. While doing above, also provide zero-emission electric power generation options

You have to travel back in time to 2006 to appreciate how ambitious Musk's goals were at the time. Musk was seen as a lunatic by critics at the time. But, as you'll see below, he quickly proved them wrong:

  1. Build sports car -- Tesla Roadster
  2. Use that money to build an affordable car -- Tesla Model S
  3. Use that money to build an even more affordable car -- Incomplete, though work is thought to be underway on that cheaper, electric BMW 3 Series competitor
  4. While doing above, also provide zero-emission electric power generation options  -- SolarCity and now the emerging sun-powered Tesla Supercharger stations

Only Musk, it's likely, believed Tesla could reach three of those four goals in less than seven years, but as we've seen on far too many occasions to count, Musk and Tesla are ready, willing, and able to do the inconceivable.

Master Plan Part Two

After so much anticipation, CEO Elon Musk penned Part Duex of the Master Plan. And it's not as straightforward as the first. Here are Musk's main points in a nutshell.

  • Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage
  • Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments
  • Develop a self-driving capabilitythat is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning
  • Enable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it

Part Two's key aim is to focus on making electric automobiles available in all segments, which would, of course, include an electric truck. As Musk put it:

"Today, Tesla addresses two relatively small segments of premium sedans and SUVs. With the Model 3, a future compact SUV and a new kind of pickup truck, we plan to address most of the consumer market."
