Collision Avoidance Assist with Autopilot Tesla Model Y

The following collision avoidance features are intended to improve your and your passengers' safety:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking - automatically applies braking to reduce the impact of a frontal collision.
  • Obstacle-Aware Acceleration - reduces acceleration if Model Y detects an object in its immediate driving path.
  • Forward Collision Warning - provides visual and audible warnings in situations where Model Y detects a high risk of a frontal collision.

Caution: Make sure all cameras and sensors are in good working order. Autopilot performance can be harmed by dirty cameras and sensors, as well as weather conditions like rain and faded lane lines.

WARNING: Forward Collision Warning Warnings are provided for informational purposes only and are not intended to replace careful driving and sound judgement. When driving, keep your eyes on the road and don't rely on Forward Collision Warning to warn you of a potential collision. Several variables can diminish or degrade performance, resulting in warnings that are either superfluous, invalid, or erroneous, or warnings that are overlooked. Putting your trust in Forward Collision Warning to warn you of a potential collision can lead to catastrophic injury or death.

WARNING: Automatic Emergency Braking is not intended to prevent all collisions. In some cases, striving to reduce your driving speed can help to lessen the effect of a frontal accident. Using Automatic Emergency Braking to escape an accident might lead to significant damage or even death.

WARNING: Obstacle-Aware Acceleration is not intended to avoid a collision. It can reduce the severity of a collision in certain circumstances. Avoiding a collision by relying on Obstacle-Aware Acceleration can result in catastrophic damage or death.

 

Forward Collision Warning

The radar sensor and forward-looking camera(s) scan the area in front of Model Y for the presence of an object such as a vehicle, motorbike, bicycle, or pedestrian. Forward Collision Warning is designed to make a chime and highlight the vehicle in front of you in red on the touchscreen if a collision is thought likely unless you take rapid corrective action. TAKE IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTION IF THIS HAPPENS!

When the risk of a collision has been minimised (for example, you have decelerated or stopped your Model Y, or the object in front of your vehicle has moved out of your driving path), the warnings will automatically disappear.
When Model Y issues a Forward Collision Warning, if no urgent action is taken, Automatic Emergency Braking (if activated) may deploy the brakes automatically if a collision is considered imminent.

Forward Collision Warning is enabled by default. Press Controls > Autopilot > Forward Collision Warning to turn it off or alter its sensitivity. You can turn off the warning or select to be warned Late or Early instead of the default warning level of Medium.

Note: Unless you manually adjust the Forward Collision Warning setting, it will remain the same.

WARNINGS: The Forward Collision Warning camera(s) and sensors are designed to monitor an approximate region of up to 525 feet (160 metres) in your driving path. Road and weather conditions can have an impact on the region that Forward Collision Warning monitors.

  • When driving, proceed with caution.
  • Forward Collision Warning is only intended to deliver visual and audio alerts in the event of a collision. It makes no attempt to slow Model Y down or apply the brakes. It is the driver's responsibility to take corrective action as soon as he or she sees or hears a warning.
  • Forward Collision is a term used to describe a collision that occurs when two objects Warning can be used to convey a warning in instances where a collision is unlikely. Stay vigilant and pay attention to the surroundings in front of Model Y at all times so you can predict whether or not any action is required.
  • Forward Collision Warning is only active when travelling at speeds of 7 mph (10 km/h) to 90 mph (150 km/h).
  • When the driver is already braking, Forward Collision Warning does not issue a warning.

 

Limitations and Inaccuracies

Because collision avoidance features do not always detect all objects, vehicles, motorcycles, or pedestrians, you may receive unwanted, erroneous, invalid, or missing alerts for a variety of reasons, especially if:

  • The road contains severe curves.
  • Visibility is poor (due to rain, snow, fog, and other factors).
  • The camera's view is obstructed by bright light (such as from incoming headlights or direct sunshine) (s).
  • The radar sensor is filthy, covered, or otherwise blocked.
  • The camera(s) can't see through the windshield because it's fogged up, dusty, or covered by a sticker, for example.

Warning: The limits listed above are not an exhaustive list of conditions that could prevent Collision Avoidance Assist functions from working properly. For a variety of causes, these features may fail to perform their intended role. It is the driver's job to stay alert, pay attention, and take corrective action as soon as possible to avoid collisions.
