With the latest Tesla software update bringing integration with the Powerwall and Tesla’s electric vehicles, homes in the future could see a full adoption of Tesla’s energy capabilities. Tesla’s solar roof system is made from robust, miniature solar panels to promote green living for sustainable housing and added benefits to the EV industry.
The solar roof has both solar and non-solar tiles, and they are practically indistinguishable from street level. Before installation, Tesla’s energy experts determine the appropriate number of solar tiles based on the household’s energy needs.
The solar roof tiles are an eye-catching replacement for traditional roof tiles, and they are three times stronger. Tesla’s solar tiles can withstand hail storms without damage while conventional tiles are more likely to shatter. This is just another perfect example from Tesla balancing aesthetics with functionality.
Recently, Tesla restructured its solar roof pricing in a bid to increase sales. This is by no means an indication that sales are slipping – in fact, at the end of the second quarter in 2020, Tesla announced in their financial results that solar roof installations ‘roughly tripled’ when compared to this year’s first quarter:
“Our new pricing is made possible by several improvements, such as moving to recommending standard sizes that customers can order with one click online and the reduction of customer acquisition costs through the automation of processes. Solar Roof installations roughly tripled in Q2 compared to Q1. We continue to expand our installation team to increase the deployment rate.”
The base solar 4.08kW system starts at about $8,200 if you don’t take any incentives into account. The bigger solar roof systems have seen a price increase because they become more cost-effective per watt as their size is bigger to augment capacity.
Tesla’s latest pricing for the larger systems, before any incentives are deducted, are listed below:
- Medium 8.16kW solar system increased by $400 to $16,400
- Large 12.24kW solar system increased by $1,100 to $24,600
- Extra Large 16.34kW solar system increased by $2,800 to $32,800
Even though Tesla added a price increase to the bigger solar roof systems, they are also taking part in price matching. So, if you find a cheaper solar installation, Tesla will offer to match it in price.
The solar roof systems works with the Tesla Powerwall. It is an easy to install, sleek looking battery that can be mounted indoors or outdoors because it is water-resistant and designed to withstand severe weather conditions. It is also child and pet friendly as it does not have exposed wires or hot air vents. The Powerwall is installed in the home to store the energy generated from the solar roof. When it detects a power outage, it automatically kicks in to provide the household with energy, keeping lights, devices, and appliances online, as well as recharge your Tesla car. You can also use it to store energy from the main grid.
The Tesla mobile app is highly useful for real-time monitoring of the home’s energy consumption and production. It also gives you control to manage and balance the energy use for both your home and electric vehicle. The app offers instant notifications and remote access from anywhere.
If replacing your house roof does not seem viable, you can always opt for Tesla’s discreet, powerful solar panels. The integrated hardware and simple design allow the panels to be securely attached to the roof and connected to the Powerwall to charge the battery as an energy source whenever you need it.
Tesla is gearing up for increased installations as they continue to publicize their need for roofers to join their team without having previous experience as Tesla will offer the proper training.
