Supported Key Types Tesla Model Y

Model Y supports three different types of keys that can be used to power on and drive the vehicle.

  

Authenticated Smartphone App

Bluetooth can be used to connect your personal smartphone to the vehicle. Using the Tesla smartphone app, you may lock and unlock your car automatically, as well as do a variety of additional tasks.

 

Key Card

Tesla supplies a key card that uses short-range radio-frequency identification (RFID) signals to interface with the Model Y. The key card is used to validate your phone's compatibility with the Model Y, as well as to add and remove other key cards, phones, and key fobs. Use your key card to unlock, drive, and lock the Model Y if your authenticated phone's battery dies, or if it is lost or stolen.

Key Fob

You can use the key fob to open the front and rear trunks, as well as unlock, lock, and drive the Model Y. If your region allows it, the key fob also has automatic locking and unlocking capabilities (see Passive Key Fob).
This is an add-on item that must be purchased separately. A total of 19 keys can be used on the Model Y, including authorised phones, key cards, and up to four key fobs.

Note:
Keep in mind to bring the key with you when driving. You can drive Model Y away from its key, but you won't be able to turn it back on after it's turned off.
